Op-Ed: No More Fascist Dog Catchers
These are the five things all Democrats, Republicans, and Independents can fight for to help stop MAGA's fascist takeover of America.
Hi. I saw something from our friends at More Perfect Union this morning, and I wanted to share it with you here. The image above perfectly encapsulates our philosophy at The Monroe Gazette: to deny any power to people who are part of the MAGA movement.
If they’re a member of the local planning board? We want them out.
If they’re running to be on your local Village board? We want them out.
If they’re running to be the Mayor or Supervisor of your local municipality? We want them out.
This movement must be destroyed.
And just so we’re all on the same page, this isn’t because we like Democrats. We don’t.
There are a lot of Schumer Democrats that we MUST deny power to as well.
I look at this as a war against them both. And there are three key objectives here:
First: Deny power, and evict from power, anyone affiliated with the MAGA movement.
That’s why, here in Southern Orange County, when given a choice between Dorey Houle (MAGA) and James G. Skoufis (Schumer Democrat), we hold our nose and vote for Skoufis. It’s not even a choice. MAGA must be denied power at every opportunity.
Everytime.
Everywhere.
In every election.
Second: Evict from power, or deny power, anyone who is a Schumer Democrat.
A Schumer Democrat is exactly what it sounds like. Someone who talks the talk, but never, ever, delivers for the American people when the opportunity arises.
Whenever possible, these people should be primaried out of existence.
State Senator James G. Skoufis is a Schumer Democrat.
Monroe Town Supervisor Candidate, Fossil Fuel Loving Freak David Rabbitts, is a Schumer Democrat.
While Schumer Democrats are not as dangerous as their MAGA Counterparts, they are ultimately as bad for the American people in the grand scheme of things.
Why? Because while they don't like Trump or MAGA, they also don’t want to address the systemic issues that gave us Trump and MAGA in the first place.
The Schumer Democrats are too addicted to all that corporate money.
MAGA is not a populist movement.
Most people across America hate MAGA. The silent majority of people in our region do, too.
But most of those people also don’t vote, they don’t organize, they don’t speak up, and they don’t fight back.
The good news is that this is starting to change.
The bad news is, what I see right now are a lot of disparate groups all asking for different things. All of those things are good, and must be demanded. But it also doesn’t give us a north star. One that all these groups can point to and say, “That’s what we want. That’s how we’ll fix this. This is where we want to go.”
So, here’s my suggestion …
Third: There are five specific things we Democrats, Republicans, and Independents need to do, together, to defeat both MAGA and the Schumer Democrats.
A Constitutional Amendment overturning Citizens United. (This gets rid of the corporate money in elections, since the Courts say corporations have the same rights as people, including speech.)
A Constitutional Amendment overturning Trump V. United States and Trump V. Anderson. This eliminates the decision to grant any president full immunity from prosecution. This also restores the 14th Amendment’s Insurrection Clause to be applied at the State level for federal elections. If you don’t remember, Trump V. Anderson was the reason Trump remained on the ballot in 2024 despite multiple states saying he was disqualified on the grounds of the 14th Amendment.)
A Constitutional Amendment introducing term limits for members of Congress, the Senate, and the Supreme Court, and enshrining the right for all Americans to equal access to the ballot via the United States Postal Service. (In other words, you can vote automatically by mail in any election without jumping through all the hoops. Everyone has a right to a ballot, and the USPS will deliver it to you.) Also, given Trump’s intentions to run for a third term, this new amendment should clarify under the 12th Amendment the following: No person who has served eight years as president (either consecutively or non-consecutively) of the United States is eligible to serve as president.
A commitment, pledged to by any member of Congress who wants to stay in Congress, to fund all government agencies fully — and appropriately staff them. No more two- to three-hour wait times for Social Security when you call them. No more Billionaire tax havens hidden from the IRS. No more repeat polluters (like we have here in South Blooming Grove) on the EPA’s watch. And plenty of good-paying jobs for those who need them.
Finally, the big two:
Anyone who wants to opt in to Medicare can do so. You like your private insurance? Keep it. But if you don’t have insurance? You can opt in to Medicare.
Social Security should be expanded to every American citizen. In the same way Alaska has its Permanent Fund, there is no reason why we can’t expand Social Security so that every American over 18 gets a check each month. Alaska demonstrated that not only can programs like this work, but they are also hugely popular. “But how do we pay for it?” You have NO idea how much money there is out there, right now, that goes uncollected by the billionaires and the corporations through tax evasion, exploiting loopholes, and using offshore tax havens to hide their money. So this idea that we can’t pay for these things is a myth. We can. The MAGA Republicans and Schumer Democrats just don’t want to.
Until recently, there’s been a belief in Southern Orange County that what happens nationally doesn’t matter in a local election. And that was true. The keyword is was.
It’s not true anymore.
So I don’t care if someone is running to be your local dog catcher. If they’re MAGA? They must be denied power.
Because if you think the world stops outside your front door in Woodbury, you will find the consequences of your inaction at your doorstep.
Much sooner than you think.
